(= HBSS)
Balanced salt solution made up according to the recipe given originally by Hanks. Phosphate-buffered to pH 7.0-7.2. Suitable for mammalian and avian cells in temporary culture though is not a growth medium and will not sustain prolonged survival. Usually contains phenol red as an indicator.
